[Heb. midrash ‘commentary’ (2 Chron. xxiv. 27, Revised Version 1884), f. root drš to investigate, search.] An ancient Jewish homiletic commentary on some portion of the Hebrew scriptures, in which free use was made of allegorical interpretation and legendary illustration. Also, the mode of treatment characteristic of this class of commentaries.
