[a. G. pinakon (G. Städeler 1859, in Ann. d. Chem. u. Pharm. CXI. 279), f. Gr. πίναξ tablet + -one.]
A white crystalline substance (C₆H₁₄O₂), crystallizing in large tablets, produced by the action of sodium or sodium-amalgam on aqueous acetone. Also, any other alcohol having two hydroxyl groups which are bonded to adjacent tertiary carbon atoms. Now usu. called pinacol.
1866Watts Dict. Chem. IV. 648 Liquid pinacone is a colourless syrup.1877― Fownes' Chem. II. 177 Pinacone, when heated with acids, is converted into pinacolin.1884Roscoe & Schorlemmer Treat. Chem. III. ii. 12 The pinacones decompose very readily into water and the ketones, to which the name of pinacolines is given.1913T. H. Pope tr. Molinari's Treat. Org. Chem.
