Pertaining to or derived from oil; spec. in oleic acid: one of the fatty acids (C18H34O2), occurring in most fats, and a constituent of most soaps; obtained as an oily liquid, colourless, tasteless, and inodorous (when pure); also called elaic acid; in pl. extended to the series of acids to which this belongs: see quot. 1899. oleic ether: a general name for the oleates of hydrocarbon radicals, esp. oleate of ethyl, C18H33(C2H5)O2.
