[Jap., f. ip (f. ichi) one + pon, hon numerical counter for something long, as a staff, sword, baton, etc.
Ippon was orig. used as a judge's call at a contest of swordsmanship, implying ‘a clean strike worth one point’, and was later applied similarly in other branches of traditional military art, as judo, karate, etc.]
A score of one full point, awarded to a contestant for a successfully executed throw or hold, or for two scores of waza-ari.
