Applied to an amorphous magnetic material in which the individual electron spins are aligned more or less anti-parallel to their closest neighbours but overall there is a statistical distribution of orientations with no preferred direction. Also speroˈmagnetism.
The form sperimagnetic occurred throughout the 1973 coinage paper. This was corrected by Coey et al. in Physical Rev. Lett. (1976) XXXVI. 1062.
1973Nature 21–28 Dec. 445/2 The new phenomenon of speromagnetism (or amorphous superparamagnetism) adds a further delectable layer of complexity to what is already a highly elaborate network of phenomena. 1973Coey & Readman in Ibid. 477/2 Such a configuration, with the spins fixed relative to each other but possessing no overall preferred direction, is illustrated in Fig. 2c.
