Ionian Sea, the part of the Mediterranean between Greece and Southern Italy; Ionian Islands, the seven Greek islands which lie on the eastern coast of this sea.

2. Mus. Ionian mode.
a. One of the modes in ancient Greek music, characterized as soft and effeminate.
b. The last of the ‘authentic’ ecclesiastical modes, having C for its ‘final’, and G for its ‘dominant’, and thus corresponding to the modern major diatonic scale.

B. n. A member of that great division of the Hellenic race, which occupied Attica and the northern coast of the Peloponnesus, and established colonies in Sicily, Italy, Gaul, on the shores and islands of the Euxine, and especially in Asia Minor, where a large district was named from them Ionia.
b. An Ionian Islander.
