A kind of lace of thread or silk, for trimming the edges of garments: also called pearling-lace. In pl. pearlings, edgings of this lace; also transf. clothes trimmed with it.

b. pearling lugger (see quot. 1948).

Muhlhauser Cruise of Amaryllis v. 233 A fair number of Australian ‘black fellows’ are to be found among the crews of the pearling ‘luggers’, as they are called, though really ketches. 1930Mariner's Mirror XVI. 192 The pearling ‘luggers’ of the Torres Straits are usually ketch-rigged. 1948R. de Kerchove Internat.
