L. peribolus (Vulgate); f. περί round + βολ-, from βάλλειν to throw: cf. prec.] In Gr. Antiq. An enclosure or court around a temple; the wall bounding such an enclosure. Hence applied to an exterior enclosure in early Christian churches.
