The name of Franz Carl Müller-Lyer (1857–1916), German sociologist and philosopher, used attrib. (and absol.) to designate an optical illusion he described (Arch. f. Anat. u. Physiol. (Physiol. Abth.) (1889) Suppl. 263–70), by which a line with a V-shaped arrowhead at each end appears shorter than an adjacent line of equal length but with the V-shaped portions reversed and pointing inwards.
