A type of magnetism which is macroscopically similar to ordinary ferromagnetism but which is attributed to the non-parallel (esp. antiparallel) alignment of neighbouring atoms or ions having unequal magnetic moments.
1948Physics Abstr. LI. 336/1 In some cases (ferri⁓magnetism) the substance behaves at a low temperature like a ferromagnetic, but..the saturation magnetization at 0°k is much less than that corresponding to complete parallelism of all the spins. 1966[see ferromagnetism].
