1779Gentleman's Mag. 49 545 We ordain that the Droit de Suite over mainmortables shall henceforth be abolished and suppressed. 1831in R. Jones Peasant Rents (1895) iii. 78 Proprietors, exercising their droit de suite.., had forced the reluctant tribunals of the king to deliver into their hands the property of deceased citizens..who were proved to have been originally serfs on the estates of the claimants. 1926G. Renard & G. Weulersse Life & Work Mod. Europe ix. 334 In the last years of the sixteenth century..the lord was given an absolute droit de suite over all the occupants of his domain. 1962E. M. Evanston tr. G. Lefebvre French Revol. I. iii. 47 Louis XVI freed French serfs from the droit de suite, by which a lord could claim his subject wherever he found him.
2. Fine Art. The legal right of the creator of an artwork to collect a royalty on its (public) resale by another party.
Such a right is granted by law in various jurisdictions, esp. in the countries of the European Union.
