Name of an ancient people and kingdom in the Near East: now usually equated with the Hittites. See Hittite n. and a.

XI. 599/1 Egyptian evidence shows that in the time of the 18th to the 20th dynasties, between the years 1500–1190 b.c., a powerful northern kingdom Kheta sought perpetually to obtain political influence over Syria and therefore often fought with Egypt. Already the Pharaoh Thutmosis III. (1501–1447), who had conquered Syria as far as the Upper Euphrates, received presents from the prince of Kheta. 1970Bray & Trump Dict. Archaeol. 104 Hittites, Hatti or (to the Egyptians) Kheta, a people who infiltrated Anatolia and in smaller numbers the Levant from the north c 2000 bc, but the details of their origin are more than somewhat obscure. |
