1. A native or inhabitant of South Africa (see below).
This area of southernmost Africa consisted in the 19th century of a group of British and Boer territories; in 1910, following the British victory in the Boer war (1899–1902), these united to form the Union of South Africa; in 1961 the Republic of South Africa was established.
