However, the term is said to predate the development of concave Byzantine coinage (P. Grierson 1971, in Numism. Chron. 7th Ser. XI. 253-60), and ulterior derivation from colloq. Arab. shiffī̲ having a lip, rimmed + L. -atus has been proposed.] Of a coin (esp. from the late Byzantine Empire): having the shape of a shallow bowl; concave, cup-shaped.
