[late or med.L. īleum, for which classical L. had only īlia (pl. of īle or īlium, with a dat. sing. īliō), in the sense (1) flanks, loins, (2) small guts, entrails. The form īleum (īleon, -os) seems to have arisen from a confusion of this with īleus, Gr. εἰλεός (see ileus, iliac), whence also its restricted sense.]
