An epizootic viral disease of sea-birds, originally observed in the Manx shearwater, Puffinus puffinus.
1948Miles & Stoker in Nature 26 June 1017/1 We suggest that the name ‘puffinosis’ is suitable for this epizootic disease of Puffinus puffinus puffinus. 1953Jrnl. Animal Ecol. XXII. 131 Though our evidence is scanty we suggest, tentatively, that puffinosis may be primarily a disease of gulls of several species and exist over a wide area. 1965Brit. Birds LVIII. 432 In 1965 some young Oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus were found dying with blistered and swollen legs and feet; these were all in areas where puffinosis occurs and it is possible that they were suffering from the disease. 1977S. Palearctic I. 148/2 Colonial nesting [amongst Manx shearwaters] may be advantageous in reducing predation, though disadvantageous in facilitating interference between pairs (causing egg losses) and spread of epizootics of puffinosis. 1982Arch.
