Gr. θεσµοθέτης, pl. -θέται (see def.), f. θεσµός law + -θετης, forming agent-nouns from root θε- to place, lay down.] Each of the six inferior archons in ancient Athens, who were judges and law-givers; hence transf. one who lays down the law.
