A proposed monetary system based on the use of an amalgam of gold and silver as a standard (see quot. 1979). Hence symmeˈtallic a.; symˈmetallist n. an advocate of symmetallism (also attrib. or as adj.).

V. 443 The arrangement that there should be a joint demand for gold and silver money might, perhaps, be called symmetallism, to distinguish it from the arrangement that there should be a composite supply which is called bimetallism.
