a. A tree of the genus so called, belonging to the family Flacourtiaceæ and native to tropical Asia.
1928Daily Express 20 Feb. 2/1 Hydnocarpus oil is obtained from the dried fruit of the hydnocarpus tree. 1953N. L. Bor Man. Indian Forest Bot. 145 In Hydnocarpus the fruits are produced on the branches.
b. attrib., as hydnocarpus therapy; hydnocarpus oil, a yellowish oil or soft cream-coloured fat obtained from the seeds of trees of the genus Hydnocarpus, esp. H. wightiana and H. anthelminthica, and used, formerly extensively, in the treatment of leprosy.
