A polypeptide hormone secreted by the thymus which stimulates the development of thymocytes.
1974Basch & Goldstein in Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. LXXI. 1477/2 It has been brought to our attention that our term thymin for this polypeptide hormone is being confused with the base thymine... We therefore intend to change our terminology in the future and use the term thymopoietin.1980H. N. Eisen Immunology (ed. 2) xviii. 416/2 Thymopoietin, a small protein (49 amino acid residues), has been sequenced and synthesized. It causes pre-T cells..to become somewhat sensitive to mitogens, but not to become immunologically competent.
