1. a. Nicene Council, one or other of two ecclesiastical Councils held at Nicæa, the first in the year 325 for the purpose of dealing with the Arian controversy, and the second in 787 to consider the question of images.

2. Nicene Creed, a formal statement of Christian belief, based upon that adopted at the first Council of Nicæa, which was designed especially to combat the Arian heresy.
