Moench Methodus Plantas Horti Botanici et Agri Marburgensis (1794) 631), f. the name of Johann Hieronymus Kniphof (1704–63), German physician and botanist + -ia1.] A perennial herb of the genus so called, native to southern or eastern Africa, belonging to the family Liliaceæ, and bearing spikes of red, yellow, or orange flowers; also called red-hot poker, torch lily, and formerly Tritoma, a synonymous generic name.
