[mod.L. (Nägeli and Leitgeb 1868), f. Gr. περί around + cambium, q.v.]
A term applied to the outer portion of the vascular cylinder or stele, lying between the vascular bundles internally and the innermost layer of the cortex externally. It was originally used with special reference to roots.
The term has now been generally abandoned for pericycle.
1875Bennett & Dyer Sachs' Bot. 144 The formation of lateral roots in a mother-root commences..in a layer of tissue which must be considered the outer layer of the plerome, and is called Pericambium.1899Nat. Science Dec. 458 Pericambium was given up for the better term, pericycle, because the form was apt to be confused with cambium.
