FitzGerald contraction or FitzGerald effect, the contraction or foreshortening of a moving body in a direction parallel to its direction of motion, small except at speeds comparable to that of light, that was postulated independently by G. F. FitzGerald and H. A. Lorentz in 1892. (The effect is freq. named after Lorentz or after the two men jointly.)
