Any of the group of lipids consisting of the sulphuric acid ester of a cerebroside.

Only one sulfatide has been isolated and studied, cerebron sulfuric acid.1966Lancet 24 Dec. 1421/2 The predominance of sulphatide in the white matter of the brain in this disease has been noted by Lees.1978Nature 7 Dec. 625/1 The negative charge imparted by the sulphate group of the sulphatide does not seem to be the direct cause of its strong adhesion capacity, as other negatively charged lipids, such as ganglioside or phosphatidyl inositol, did not adhere strongly.
