A hormone, secreted by the female gametes of fungi belonging to the genus Allomyces, which attracts male gametes of the same group.
1958L. Machlis in Nature 28 June 1790/2 Sirenin (I am indebted to Dr. A. Vegis for suggesting, what seems to me, this aptly descriptive name) is the name, used here for the first time, for the chemotactic sexual hormone from the water-mould Allomyces which attracts the male gametes and is produced by the female gametes.1976Ann. Rev. Microbiol. XXX. 231 Sirenin activity is very specific, and the hormone does not attract either female gametes and asexual spores of Allomyces..or male hyphae of Achlya.1982J. B. Harborne Introd. Ecol. Biochem. (ed. 2) vii. 178 Sirenin, which acts as a sex pheromone in the water mould Allomyces.
