An alkaloid, C₃₃H₃₅O₅N₅, present in some kinds of ergot and used chiefly in the treatment of migraine. Hence ergoˈtaminine [ad. G. ergotaminin (Spiro & Stoll 1921, in Actes Soc. Helv. Sci. Nat. 1920 236), f. ergot + amine + -ine⁵], a physiologically inactive ergot alkaloid, isomeric with ergotamine.
1921Brit. Pat. 170, 302 The principal alkaloid of ergot in the pure crystallised state..has since been designated..by the scientific name of ‘ergotamine’.1922Jrnl. Chem. Soc. A.
