A narcotic analgesic (usu. given, orally or intramuscularly, as the hydrochloride, a colourless crystalline compound) which has actions similar to those of morphine but of shorter duration and is less addictive; ethyl 1-methyl-4-phenylpiperidine-4-carboxylate, C15H21NO2.
