Sp. estampido a sudden crash, report of a gun.] A sudden fright seizing upon large bodies of cattle and horses, causing them to run wildly to great distances; hence, any sudden rush caused by panic. So estamˈpede v. trans., to frighten (cattle, etc.) away; to drive off. ‖ estampeˈdero [Sp. estampidero], an animal under the influence of stampede; a runaway. estamˈpedo v. [f. Sp. estampido n.: cf. stampedo, intr.] (of cattle, etc.) to rush off in a panic.
