A colourless, oily, liquid, triterpenoid hydrocarbon, C₃₀H₅₀, which in animals is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of cholesterol and occurs esp. in the liver oils of sharks and other elasmobranch fishes.
1916M. Tsujimoto in Jrnl. Industr. & Engin. Chem. VIII. 896/2 From..the fact that the author has discovered the hydrocarbon first in the liver oils of the squaloid sharks, he proposes the name ‘Squalene’ for the hydro⁓carbon.1938[see œstrin].1964New Scientist 22 Oct. 221/1 These rearrangements occur as part of a marvellously complicated, concerted enzymic process by which the long molecule of squalene is folded and formed into rings.1978Sci.
