[mod. f. (F. oryctologie, 1755 in Hatz.-Darm.): see orycto- and -logy.]
The science of ‘fossils’ or things dug out of the earth, either (a) inorganic or (b) organic; a. the science which deals with the nature and composition of rocks and minerals, mineralogy; b. that department of geology which deals with fossil organic remains, palæontology.
