1727–41Chambers Cycl. s.v., In the antient poetry, Heptachord verses were those sung or played on seven chords; that is, in seven different notes, or tones; and probably on an instrument with seven strings.
B. n.
a. A musical instrument of seven strings.
b. A series of seven notes, formed of two conjunct tetrachords.
c. The interval of a seventh.

Arts & Sc., Heptachord,..was applied to the lyre, when it had but seven strings. 1775Ash, Heptachord, a musical instrument of seven strings, a poetical composition played or sung on seven chords or notes. 1774Burney Hist.
