[Named after its inventor, Carl Georg Johan Petersen (1860–1928), Danish marine biologist, who first described it in 1911 (Rep. Danish Biol. Station XX. 47).]
A kind of grab for obtaining a sample of the bed of a body of water, consisting of two jaws semicircular in vertical cross-section and hinged along the top, arranged so as to close automatically on contact with the bottom.
