[f. papilla + œdema, as repr. G. papillenödem (A. Eloching 1895, in A. von Græfe's Arch. für Opthhalm. XLI. ii. 276).]
Non-inflammatory swelling of the optic disc due to increased intracranial pressure on the optic nerve, usu. as a result of a tumour or abscess of the brain.
1908J. H. Parsons Path. of Eye IV. xxvii. 1349, I suggest the use of the term ‘papillœdema’ to replace ‘choked disc’ (Stauungspapille).1922R. F. Moore Med.
