The name of the French teacher of the blind Louis Braille (1809–52) used attrib. to designate a system of embossed printing for the blind, perfected by him in 1834. Also ellipt.
In this system the symbols for the letters, etc., are composed of raised dots arranged in different ways. It was adopted as the standard system in England by the British and Foreign Blind Association, 1869–70.

Hence as v. trans., to transcribe or print in Braille; to mark in Braille. So ˈBrailler (see quot. 1951); ˈBraillist, a person who transcribes Braille.
