[ad. L. camēlopardus, -pardalis, Gr. καµηλοπάρδαλις, f. κάµηλος camel n. + πάρδαλις pard: so Fr. camélopard. Confusion with leopard led to the erroneous early spelling cameleopard in med.L., Fr., and Eng., and to the vulgar pronunciation as ˈcamel-ˈleopard. See also camelion.]
