A weakly acidic tetracyclic phenol, C₃₁H₃₅N₂O₁₁, that is produced by certain actinomycetes of the genus Streptomyces and is used in treating infections with bacteria resistant to less toxic antibiotics; also, the sodium or calcium salt of this phenol, in which forms it is usually administered.
