[The name of Paolo Maffei (b. 1926), Italian astronomer, who described the galaxies in 1968 (Publ. Astron. Soc. Pacific LXXX. 618).]
attrib. and absol. Designating either of two galaxies discovered by Maffei near the galactic equator, which are visible only in red and infrared light. More fully in Maffei 1 and Maffei 2.
