a. A mode of reproduction found in certain protozoa and algæ, in which copulation consists in the fusion of whole organisms morphologically similar to the vegetative form.

b. A mode of reproduction found in certain fungi, in which the entire thallus becomes a gametangium and fusion of two mature individuals occurs.
