The name of A. J. Widmanstätten (1754–1849), Austrian scientist, used attrib. with reference to an orderly pattern of intersecting bands seen in some meteorites and steels when a polished section is etched, attributed to the crystallization or precipitation of a new solid phase along the crystal planes of a parent solid phase.
