Taken by Nares as = ‘whipped, probably at the cart's tail’, f. scutch v., and by some equated with Ray's ‘Overswitcht housewife, i.e. a whore; a ludicrous word’ (N.C. Wds.); Malone, ‘perhaps with more propriety’ (Schmidt), suggests ‘worn in the service’, in which sense it is used by Scott.
