2. Cycle-Racing and Athletics. The act of (tactical) pace-making, and hence of artificially increasing the speed of a competitor by allowing him to proceed in the slip-stream of a (usu. motorized) vehicle; also, the act of distributing effort carefully over a race to ensure optimum performance, esp. by utilizing the wind resistance offered by other competitors. Also attrib.
