Defective articulation in speech. Hence aˈnarthric a., of or pertaining to anarthria (Cent. Dict., 1889).
First used in G. by E. Leyden 1867, in Berl. klin. Wochenschr. 25 Feb. 78/1, adopting a suggestion of Dr. Tobias.
1881Syd. Soc. Lex., Anarthria, disjointed speech, an impairment of the articulation usually dependent upon bulbar paralysis. 1897H. T. Pershing in T. L. Stedman 20th Cent. Pract. X. ix. 779 Stammering, syllable-stumbling, and scanning... The word anarthria may be used to designate any of these defects. 1915C. B. Craig in Jrnl. Amer. Med. Assoc. LXIV. 51/2 Where this area is the site of disease, the resultant symptom is designated by Marie [1906 La Semaine Médicale 23 May 243/3] anarthria, and is the simple motor aphasia of the older writers. 1926Contemp.
