The name given to a group of brass musical instruments of the trumpet kind, invented by a Belgian, Charles Joseph Sax (1791–1865), and improved by his son Antoine Joseph, known as Adolphe. Called also sax-cornet. Also sax-tuba, a brass instrument of this class. (Cf. saxophone n., saxotromba.)
