A selenide of nickel, ideally NiSe2, which usu. also contains copper, lead, or silver, probably as impurities, and occurs in grey reniform masses.

Philadelphia LXXVII. 317 Penroseite was obtained in a small collection of minerals which the writer purchased from a local merchant at Colquechaca, Bolivia.Ibid. 321 It is a pleasure to name this new mineral in honor of Dr. Richard A. F. Penrose, Jr.1937Amer. Mineralogist XXII. 322 The minerals most likely to be intergrown with penroseite and blockite are cubic in symmetry, such as clausthalite,.., naumannite.., and argentiferous galena.Ibid., Penroseite and blockite may therefore be regarded as identical minerals and the latter name may be discarded.1968I.
