trans. To treat (steel) so as to reduce its tendency to crack or distort by quenching rapidly to a temperature just above that at which martensite begins to form, allowing the temperature to equalize throughout, and then cooling slowly. So ˈmartempered ppl. a., ˈmartempering vbl. n.
