XCII. 248 Chibret proposes to employ the term ‘skiascopy’, in place of the terms keratoscopy, retinoscopy, pupilloscopy, and phantoscopy..to designate this..method of determining the ocular refraction based upon the examination of the shadows which are formed in the eye when light is thrown into it. 1933Arch. Ophthalmol. X. 689 Cycloskiascopy is more difficult than the classic method of cylinder skiascopy. 1958Ophthalmic Lit. XII. 557 The term ‘skiascopy’ was proposed by Chibret instead of retinoscopy, as the retina is not normally in focus. 1976Ophthalmic Res. VIII. 115 Data of skiascopy are not very exact because of the difficult procedure of measurement.
Hence ˈskiascope, an instrument that directs light into a patient's eye along the line of sight of the examiner, so that the latter can judge the refraction of the eye from the movement of the illuminated area and the shadows as the light source is moved; skiaˈscopic a., of or pertaining to skiascopy; skiaˈscopically adv.
