[ad. Gr. ἀτοπία unusualness, f. ἄτοπος unusual (ἀ- priv. + τόπος place).]
A form of hypersensitivity in which acute reactions occur, on exposure to the antigen, in some special organ or tissue. So ˈatopic, aˈtopic, a., (a) out of place (Webster 1909); (b) Med. pertaining, relating to, or characterized by atopy.

This latter sub-group evidently needs a special term by which it may be conveniently designated, and this need is satisfactorily met with the word atopy, which was..suggested by Professor Edward D.
