A colourless oil whose molecule forms part of that of chlorophyll and vitamins E and K, and which is an acyclic terpenoid alcohol; 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecenol, C₂₀H₄₀O.
1907Jrnl. Chem. Soc. XCII. i. 784 The authors have been able..to remove the magnesium quantitatively and to obtain for the first time an ashless compound closely related to chlorophyll. This derivative is an ester, termed phaeophytin, and is hydrolysed readily by alkalis, yielding an unsaturated alcohol, phytol, C₂₀H₄₀O, which is formed also by the action of alkalis on chlorophyll. For the hypothetical saturated hydrocarbon, corresponding with this alcohol, the authors propose the name phytane.1911[see phytane].1950[see phæophorbide].1974Sci. Amer. Dec. 73/1 Attached to the porphyrin ring in chlorophyll is a long hydrocarbon ‘tail’, the phytol chain.
