The stage in mitotic or meiotic nuclear division, following prophase and preceding metaphase, during which the spindle is formed and the chromosomes become oriented towards it.
1931W. J. C. Lawrence in Cytologia II. 361 The degree of repulsion gradually diminishes and diakinesis is abruptly terminated by the sudden converging of the chromosomes on the centre of the nucleus. This stage (pro-metaphase) is very brief and is characterised by the secondary association of a number of the bivalents.1969Brown & Bertke Textbk. Cytol. xix. 404/1 Evidence at prometaphase and anaphase seems to indicate that the centromere is ‘pulled’ toward the pole or poles, the arms of the chromosome apparently passively following along.
